ABOUT OUR DANCE CLASSES

Studio 109 offers a wide variety of recreation and competitive classes in dance.  In addition to regularly scheduled classes, Studio 109 offers camps and workshops that allow dancers to experience other genres and instructors from outside our studio.

 

We are focused on nurturing the growth and development of every dance, offering instruction for beginners to advanced in a variety of styles.

Intro - 

Unique to the Rochester area, this introduction to dance class is perfect for your little one! Children will discover the joy of dance through movement, by playing games, using props, playing with instruments and listening to fun songs! For children 18 months to 3 years old.

​

Adaptive -

Adaptive dance is a movement exploration for students with medical, physical or learning impairments. 
The program is sensory-motor based with many opportunities for language and social skills development. students will learn a variety of dance steps, games and other activities that will have everyone moving to the music. Props and obstacle courses are often used to enhance overall confidence as well as the ability to participate in a group setting. Parent/volunteer assistance may be required for the younger age groups or for those with limited movement.


Minis - 

Mini’s classes are for dancers ages 3-5 who are looking to continue their dance journey. They will start to develop a real foundation in their technique as well as strengthening social skills in a classroom environment. Mini’s classes offer a taste of almost every style of dance, perfect for you little one who can’t stop moving, dancing, and twirling around at home!

Jazz -

This class encompasses strength and flexibility with a strong emphasis on technique. We strive to teach multiple styles of jazz and pride ourselves in our capable staff as they offer our students Broadway, fosse, contemporary Jazz, POM, collegiate team style jazz and many subgenres.

Tap -

Tap class offers a whole new world to dance; not only are you the dancer but also the percussionist in your own music. Tap, whether it’s broadway or rhythmic style, offers our students the opportunity to expand their musical knowledge. 

​

Ballet -

Ballet is the technical foundation for most dance styles. We encourage all dancers to strengthen their technique by taking a ballet class! Ballet offers strength, flexibility, agility, and poise to any dancer. For ages 8+ please contact us for class placement suggestions. 

​

Pointe -

Pointe class is an extension of years of ballet training. Once a dancer has reached a level of strength and stability, pointe can be offered to those who are ready physically and mentally for the challenge. (Invitation only, ages 12+)

Musical Theater -

Our Musical Theater classes bring Broadway to the Rochester area, not only do these include dance skills but they also offer our students acting skills as well. Musical Theater is the perfect class for any dancer looking to dive deeper into the character they’re portraying in a dance as well as fine tune their technical jazz dance skills.

Lyrical -

Lyrical dance is a dance style that embodies various aspects of ballet, jazz, acrobatics, and modern dance. It creates and narrates a story to capture the audience's attention. Dancers will learn the technical skills needed as well as the emotional skills required to truly and sincerely tell a story through dance.

Contemporary -

Contemporary dance involves incorporating aspects of movement from several other genres such as jazz, modern and ballet. Contemporary focuses on the unique movements our body is capable of, combining our technique training with free flowing movements. It allows dancers to further realize their bodies capabilities and strengths.

Hip Hop - 

Hip hop encompasses a wide range of street styles including breaking, locking and popping. This class specifically focuses on developing rhythm and coordination while encouraging individual style. Hip Hop classes are offered to ages 8+

​

Adult Classes -

Studio 109 recognizes that everyone should have the opportunity to dance. Whether you are looking to get back in the studio as an adult or you’ve never taken a class before and want to try something new, our adult dance classes are the right fit! We proudly offer Jazz, Tap, and Contemporary dance classes for ages 18+ .

Acro - 

Beginner: new to any tumbling and will be working on forward and backward rolls, handstands, cartwheels, backbend kick-overs

​

Intermediate: students should already have forward and backward rolls, handstands, cartwheels, backbend kick-overs; also, should have or close to having handstand to bridge, backbend pushover, one handed cartwheel, kickover

 

Advanced:  Students at this level should have backward rolls, handstands, cartwheels, backbend kick-overs, handstand to bridge, backbend pushover, one handed cartwheel, kickover AND "almost" have their ariel and will be working on back handsprings, ariel's, back tucks, front ariels.

 

POM -

This style of dance for the dancer ages 8 and up who is looking for a more stylized and focused class. POM uses tools like precision and sharpness to accentuate the dancers movement pulling from jazz and hip hop styles. The perfect class for someone looking to try something new!
